Abstract

"The Talk of Maine" piece on fisheries that have been exploited to near or total extinction along Maine's coast, including sea urchins, which were heavily fished when the Japanese market was brought within reach by overnight airfreight. Despite the drop in harvest pressure, the sea urchin has not made a comeback, and fisheries in Maine and elsewhere are fishing down the food chain, from larger fish like cod to smaller ones.
