Abstract
"What's in a Picture?" piece on a 1927 photo of Leonhard Seppala and his prized sled dog, Togo, at the Poland Spring House. Seppala, known as "The Big Norwegian," completed a 340-mile roundtrip with his sled dogs as part of a relay that delivered diphtheria serum to Nome, Alaska, his hometown. On a tour of the U.S., he entered a race hosted by the Ricker family and paused to rescue fellow contestant, Elizabeth Ricker. This marked the beginning of a long friendship with the owners of the Poland Spring House. The bloodlines of the Siberian dogs he bred in Poland Spring can still be found in Maine.
