Abstract
"What's in a Picture?" piece on the wreck of the "Oakey L. Alexander," which ran aground around High Head off Cape Elizabeth during a March gale in 1947. Captain Raymond Lewis grounded the ship before the remaining bulkhead gave way, and Earle Drinkwater, at the Two Lights Coast Guard Lifeboat Station, used a mortar to launch an 18-pound weight onto the ship's bridge. He thus succeeded in using a breeches buoy to bring each of the 32-man crew safely across on a zip line.
