Abstract
Wiscasset's location on the Sheepscot River once made it a gateway to Maine, but now the congested Donald Davey Bridge connecting the town to Edgecomb has become an impediment to economic development. However, residents question whether a Route 1 bypass will bring visitors to their community or divert those who now follow Route 1 through the center of town. The Wiscasset Old General Store is the oldest commercial building in town, but now sells items geared more to tourists than villagers, who say the sense of community has diminished over the years. With details on the proposed bypass, which has been an issue since 1958.
