Abstract
Thanks to the recently-built Route 112 bypass, Gorham has a chance to overcome its reputation for traffic snarls. The 40,000 vehicles a day passing through the intersection in the town center has been reduced by 12,000 vehicles, with truck traffic down by 80 percent. A possible turnpike spur could bring even more relief. An agricultural community through the end of the 1980s, Gorham still retains evidence of its past. Despite USM's Gorham campus, students don't have an appreciable presence in what is perceived as a family town. Gorham has the benefit of a well-defined town center and is centrally located in the state's biggest economic impact area.
