Abstract
The Maine pulp and paper industry is undergoing a low-key but generalized revival, thanks to updating, specialization, innovation and collaboration. The industry provides almost a quarter of the manufacturing jobs in the state and also pays the highest wages. Westbrook-based Sappi's skilled new mill manager, Donna Cassese, helped increase sales by 30 percent in 2009. Financier Lynn Tilton and her company Patriarch Partners purchased the former Georgia-Pacific pulp mill in Old Town and eventually hopes to have it producing bio-butanol from wood. With a brief history of the wood industry in Maine.
