Abstract
The family-owned Renys discount department store chain, founded in 1949 and currently operating at sixteen Maine locations, has inspired devotion, loyalty, and "Renys Love" in Mainers and out-of-staters. John Reny, the son of founder R.H. Reny, feels that Renys' success can be attributed to the continuation of his father's philosophy of quality, fairness, and affordable prices. As big box stores began opening in Maine and Sunday hours were permitted, Renys competed with expanded offerings, deals, and a commitment to locating stores in downtown spaces when possible, such as the new Portland store on Congress Street.
