Abstract
Mount Vernon is a "quirky" and "eclectic" place long appreciated by a variety of natives, visitors and new residents that have included Elizabeth Arden and Erskine Caldwell as well as hippies, back-to-landers and others who appreciate the town's natural beauty and sense of community. The town's welcoming "live and let live" attitude is as much a part of its tradition as its annual Town Meeting, an event currently in its 223rd year. The town's Comprehensive Plan encourages the growth of small farms and businesses and the thriving community center is a popular place for socializing.
