Abstract

Rockport's downtown business area and cultural organizations have experienced a recent resurgance after overcoming challenges including a flood, a fire, the loss of downtown businesses, and a population shift towards more summer residents and fewer year-round members of the community. A group called "The Rockport Six" reopened the well-known Maine Photographic Workshops under the new name, Maine Media Workshops and College, which has benefited from the support of the Leucadia Development Corporation. Leucadia also purchased several key downtown buildings, renovated the Shepard block, and brought in both business and cultural tenants. Other new local businesses have emerged, Bay Chamber Concerts opened a community music school, and the Center for Maine Contemporary Art has reorganized and reopened.
