Abstract
Profiles of Clayton and Hazel Sinclair, the operators of Rock Rest, a home-based guesthouse in Kittery Point, that served as a safe haven for African-American visitors during the pre-desegregation era. After marrying in 1936, they decided to open a guesthouse after informally hosting visitors to the area. In 2010, Clayton's son, Clayton Sinclair, Jr., donated the home's contents to the National Museum of African American History and Culture that is scheduled to open in Washington, D.C. in 2012.
