Abstract

"Talk of Maine" piece on the state's fifteen year-round island communities. A recent report issued by the Island Institute, Island Indicators 2012, shows that populations on the Casco Bay and Penobscot Bay islands have increased slightly, although not on the islands of Down East; that island residents are older than the rest of Maine; and that they rely heavily on a single industry -- lobstering. Increased internet access, however, is opening up new possibilities for some recent new arrivals.
