Abstract
"Talk of Maine" piece on Land for Maine's Future (LMF), a program that in the past twenty-five years has completed about 300 projects protecting 550,000 acres of land. The program's currently uncertain future, however, brought about by lack of funds and leadership, hinges on Question 3 on the November ballot, a $5 million bond issue to purchase land and conservation easements. Despite some concern over Gov. LePage's focus on conserving only working landscapes, as well as questions on the part of some Mainers over the shifting tax burden caused by land trusts, most people feel confident that LMF will survive to protect the landscape that is so crucial to Maine's economy and identity.
