Abstract
Profile of Portland’s Munjoy Hill and the changes it has experienced over the years, from being one of the city’s rough and scruffy neighborhoods to one of its most expensive. Between 2000 and 2011, property values on the Hill doubled, while residents’ median income (about $33,000, well below the city’s median income of $45,000) did not increase. The fact that most of the clients for the suddenly pricey real estate are not from the neighborhood concerns people like City Councilor Kevin Donoghue and Sam Cohen of the Munjoy Hill Neighborhood Organization who fear that there will be few families with children living here. The Donatellis, owners of the Laundromat and tailor shop on Congress Street, discuss what life was like on the Hill in the 1980s and how things have improved since then.
