Abstract
Profile of Chris Newell, Executive Director of the Abbe Museum, and the first Wabanaki director in the museum's 100 year history. Newell grew up in Motahkmikuhk, or Indian Township. At Dartmouth College, he discovered the power of music and began performing with the Mystic River Singers while also working construction jobs and at the Mohegan Sun casino. Years later, as an educator at the Mashantucket Pequot Museu, he discovered how many people want to dismantle their own ethnocentrism. This prepared him to take on the role at the Abbe, which was seeking to decolonize. His first year at the Abbe has coincided with the pandemic, leading to a host of challenges but also creating new opportunities to engage with the public.
