Abstract

The story of the Norwegian Cruise Line ship Riviera and its sojourn in Eastport, Maine during the summer of 2020. Describes how the ship, without passengers and sporting a fraction of its regular crew due to the restrictions of the coronavirus pandemic, came to berth at Eastport's pier. Discusses the effect of the visit on the local economy and the daily life of residents. Focuses on curiosity about the crew, who were never allowed to leave the ship during its entire stay, and the communication that sprang up between townspeople and ship using social media, handheld signs, and gift exchanges.
