Abstract

The story of Gilbert Butler, "environmental philanthropist," and the waterfront parks project he spearheaded in Maine. Details how Butler, - who fosters conservation projects around the world through his nonprofit, Butler Conservation Fund - chose Cobscook Bay in Downeast Maine as the site of his latest endeavor. Describes Cobscook Shores, the small park system Butler has built there and how it furthers Butler's philosophy of public enjoyment of the outdoors. Also discusses the inception of the Maine Outdoor Education Program, Butler's project to introduce young people to hiking, biking, paddling, and other non-motorized outdoor activities.
