Abstract

Describes the adventures of Matthew Gilbert, a 17-year-old birder from Cumberland, who became the top birder in Maine in 2020 by identifying 298 species in pursuit of the informal birding challenge known as a Big Year. Also chronicles the help Gilbert received from his mother Lisa, who chauffeured her son on many birding trips before he got his driver's license.
