Abstract

A brief look at the state of Maine's groundfishing industry, which currently accounts for just 1 percent of Maine's commercial catch. Jen Levin, formerly at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, theorized that charging more for locally-caught, carefully handled fish could help save the industry. She left GMRI and founded her own seafood company, True Fin Seafood, which currently processes around 4,000 pounds of seafood weekly and sells to upscale restaurants in southern Maine, New York, and DC as well as through the Portland Food Co-op.
