Abstract

An article delving into the notion of the "character" of Maine - what is meant by the phrase, what threatens it, and when it is worth preserving. Discusses the issues of affordability and livability in Maine communities and the ways concern for maintaining the "character" of an area can derail development - and whether that's good or bad. Discusses how the idea of maintaining a community's character has been used as a racist and elitist tool to keep out diverse populations . Discusses how Maine will look in the future if these issues are not unraveled.
