Abstract

An overview of the "art colony" in Maine, exploring the ways the concept has evolved, from the early days of artists arriving in Maine in the summer to live and paint among the locals to current schools and residencies. Describes how residencies can create community for the artists who study there, and may support artists who otherwise could not afford a summer in Ogunquit or Monhegan. Mentions the trend away from using the term "colony" due to negative connotations of imperialism.
