Abstract

Gulf Hagas, a deep, three-mile canyon east of Greenville and west of the ruins of the Katahdin Iron Works, is accessible only on foot after a two-mile hike on the Appalachian Trail. Gulf Hagas, designated a National Natural Landmark in 1968, is a river gorge, a geologic anomaly in Maine, and is visited by only a few thousand hikers each year. Details.
