Abstract

The Portland Public Library, in the midst of a $4.5 million private fundraising drive to renovate its main branch, is interested in expanding into the nearby Portland Public Market building. The market has been for sale since February as part of a $46 million real estate package being offered by Libra Foundation. Steve Podgajny, library director, said the library wants to be part of future conversations regarding the market. He sees it as an opportunity for the market to continue to be a public space. Podgajny declined to discuss specific plans the library may have for the market building, saying he wants to wait to find out if a potential buyer is even interested in discussions.
