Abstract
The Cornerstones of Science initiative has selected 14 Maine libraries as partners in an effort to engage children and adults in science through books, programs, and other events. Thermo Fisher Scientific of Waltham, Mass. donated $300,000 in grant money to the project. The Portland Public Library was selected to participate because of its diversity and the contribution it can make to the community through all its branches. Linda Putnam, assistant department head of reference and information services, said the prospect of connecting more people with the exciting ideas of science and technology is key to the program. Steve Podgajny, library director, sees the partnership as critical to helping people of all ages be better informed regarding science and technology-related public policy.
