Abstract
Portland Schools Superintendent James C. Morse and Portland Public Library Director Steve Podgajny spoke at a meeting for Riverton citizens on plans to "maintain a toe-hold" in the community without having to close the Riverton branch for lack of funds. Morse and Podgajny are making plans to allow the school district to gain space by moving the adult education program from the Riverton Elementary School to the back section of the Riverton branch. Portland Adult Education administrators would oversee the branch, which would become automated next year. Hours at the branch would increase from 15 to 60. Podgajny, who said he agreed with residents about the importance of a librarian-staffed branch, said the issue was "centered clearly and totally around the finances."
