Abstract
Residents have collected almost 2,000 signatures to save the Riverton branch library, where staff might be cut because of budget issues. Portland Public Library Director Steve Podgajny said he would like to see the branch remain open for 20 hours a week and supports the efforts. In June, the city council approved funds to keep the branch open for one year, but would not make a further commitment. Eventually, machines are expected to replace librarians, a proposal that residents oppose.
