Abstract
The Harris family of Harris Point has been processing herring in Eastport for generations, but their 15 weirs haven't seen a single herring in three years. Today, they harvest salmon from ocean pens at Ocean Products International, the largest salmon acquaculture business in America. Pioneered by Norweigans, aquaculture involves manual fertilization of fish eggs and raising fish in saltwater pens. Other Maine communities are now trying to decide if they want acquaculture more than they fear its competition with traditional fishing industries. Details.
