Abstract

All but 8 of Maine's 57 lighthouses have been automated or abandoned. The Coast Guard's policy is to destroy unneeded lighthouse-keepers' quarters as well, unless they have historic value. Lengthy and detailed article includes chronology of lighthouse abandonment, and the recollections of lighthouse-keeper's daughter Delia Mae Farris about her 17 years on Little River Island.
