Abstract
Ambrose Hamilton and his wife, Deborah Soule Hamilton, settled on Chebeague Island 250 years ago, and their descendants continue to collaborate with other islanders to carry on island traditions. With each successive generation, the people became more connected to the island and were willing to take risks to stay there. The Methodist Church, which the original Hamiltons embraced, thrived on the island and became a religious and social focus. With details on the history of the island; its removal from North Yarmouth to join Cumberland and its final and successful attempt to secede this year; the Hamilton Stone Fleet and its stone sloops; Chebeague's schools; its vital general store Hamilton Co.; the decline of the rock-slooping business; the decline in island population; and how Chebeague is preparing for the future.
