Abstract
At Jonesport-Beals High School, the Local Fisheries Knowledge Project (LFKP) connects students with their town and local knowledge through interviews they conduct with elders involved in some aspect of the fishery. The data will be available at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The project was conceived by Susan Abbott-Jamieson, a retired social scientist with NOAA. Besides providing useful scientific data and recording local fishery history, the project has energized the Jonesport Historical Society. Michael Kimball, associate professor of anthropology at the University of Maine at Machias and a project advisor, says the LFKP is being watched nationally because of its usefulness in teaching history, speaking, and writing. With comments by students on the project.
