Abstract
Wini Smart, president of the Great Cranberry Island Historical Society, researched resident Mary Caroline Stanley, born in 1847, and wrote a play of her life. In the course of her research, a local resident uncovered some of Stanley's letters and papers in a Dumpster. Carrie, as she was called, went to college, studied celestial navigation, and married ship captain Meltiah Richardson. The Stanley house is now used for artists' retreats. With details on Carrie Stanley's life, at a time when her self-reliance and learning were unusual for her gender.
