Abstract

The author, a documentary filmmaker, interviewed the naturalist E.O. Wilson for a forthcoming documentary film called Behold the Earth. An entomologist by training, Wilson's writings are also extremely humanist. The author and interviewer looks at the role that islands have played in Wilson's work, both literally and figuratively. In his first book, The Theory of Island Biogeography, Wilson and Robert MacArthur explore how many species an island can support. This publication greatly influenced later scientists; the author believes it has interdisciplinary significance, as well, and can be applied to questions of human existence and balancing human activities with the needs of the planet.
