Abstract

After the author finds a woman's shoe that had been hidden in the wall of her Gotts Island house for over 100 years, she tries to unravel the mystery of why it was there. There are many accounts of shoes hidden in the walls of 18th and 19th century houses in England and in the U.S., in Massachusetts, particularly. Scholars have speculated that the shoes may have operated as a sort of protective talisman.
