Abstract

A brief look at the painters known as the Ashcan School and their ties to Maine. Robert Henri, George Bellows, and George Luks turned their gritty urban aesthetic on the landscapes and waterfronts of Maine. The article focuses mostly on George Luks, the least well-known, and especially on his painting known as "Poverty Hump, Maine." Includes color reproductions of five paintings.
