Abstract

A look at the natural history of sharks and an account of the sharks that live in the waters off the coast of Maine. Fishermen are one of the best sources of information about shark sightings and help researchers uncover clues about one of the world's oldest and most mysterious creatures.

Includes a sidebar about the extinction of the great auk, a docile bird that was hunted by the thousands. Currently seven species of seabirds are on Maine's threatened or endangered species lists.
