Abstract

A look at the events of April 1866, when Fenian soldiers planned to attack Campobello Island. The Fenian Brotherhood was a revolutionary organization of Irish Americans that was founded in 1858 with a mission to attack British forces in Ireland; a splinter group set its sights on Canada as the British Empire's nearest territory. Describes the deployment of the Fenians to Eastport, Maine, and the failed mission's denouement.
