    Abstract

Competition between Shaw's and Shop 'n Save (Hannaford Brothers) supermarkets has worked to the benefit of Maine consumers. Shaw's was founded as a Portland tea shop in the 1850s, converted to home delivery by the 1900s, and opened for self service in 1941. Hannaford was a fruit and vegetable wholesaler from 1883 until its first retail store opened in 1944. Both have major marketing and retailing initiatives under way. Details.
