Abstract
Article on the Maine Winter Sports Center (MWSC) in Fort Kent, which this month will host more than 150 athletes from 23 countries in the 2004 Biathlon World Cup. The event is the first big test of MWSC's plan for economic development in northern Maine, which aims to restore skiing as a lifestyle, and build a tourism-based economy in the region. By the end of the fiscal year in April, the nonprofit MWSC will have spent a total of $13 million at all its Nordic and alpine skiing facilities. MWSC is funded largely by the Portland-based Libra Foundation. With a related article on the opening of two new restaurants that are counting on economic impact from MWSC: Slopes in Presque Isle, and Swamp Buck in Fort Kent.
