Abstract
"Focus on the Environment" piece about Maine Department of Environmental Protection's Office of Innovation and Assistance (OIA), which is head by Ron Dyer and which attempts to work with small businesses through its Small Business Technical Assistance Program to teach them how to avoid environmental violations and the ensuing fines. This emphasis on education and cooperation has favorably impressed small businessmen such as John Krachmar, who owns Wilbur Yacht of Southwest Harbor. Companies with fewer than 100 employees are offered free onsite audits and l have 90 days to correct any violations without being fined.
