Abstract
Respected Auburn-based company Thos. Moser Cabinetmakers is grappling with two questions: how to prepare for the eventual retirement of founder Thomas Moser, 68; and whether to spur future growth by adding upholstered furniture and home goods to its Shaker-style line of furniture. With a history of the company; a profile of Moser, who admits he is an "obstructionist" about stepping down; a look at the company's sales of furniture to institutions such as Bates College; the company's recent move into more curvilinear forms; and the pros and cons of expanding the company's line while staying focused on its niche.
