Abstract

"Newsworthy" piece reporting that a change in state rules governing the sale of hard liquor is costing Sam DiPietro, 68, of DiPietro's Market in South Portland, roughly $1,000 a day. His wide selection made his business a destination for shoppers, but now the nearby Hannaford and Shaw's supermarkets are also selling liquor. DiPietro, a former Democratic state legislator, is hopeful that the upcoming privatization of the state liquor business will increase supply and have some positive effects on his business.
