Abstract
Article about the growing "destination" wedding business in Maine. Roughly, 12,000 weddings are held in Maine each year, feeding a $1 billion industry in the state. Of those weddings about one-third are destination weddings, that is, not traditional weddings held in the bride and groom's hometown, but held in locations, such as on a mountaintop or on a beach, for the experience the location can provide. A typical wedding cost about $22,000, but a destination wedding can pump an additional $20,000 per ceremony into the local economy. With a related piece by the same author talking about wedding markups. For example, restaurants and hotels might charge 50 percent more for food served at a wedding than they would for the same fare served at a retirement party.
