Abstract
"Focus on Health Care" piece on LifeFlight of Maine of Bangor, directed by Tom Judge and providing statewide medical helicopter service. The company also flies out of Lewiston. LifeFlight was jointly established in 1998 by Eastern Maine Healthcare in Bangor and Central Maine Healthcare in Lewiston, filling a gap left after the license of Portland-based Airmed Skycare was revoked, following an accident that involved faulty judgment by pilot and owner John "Sean" Rafter. Nonprofit LifeFlight has been praised for its safety protocol. It just breaks even, and does fundraising to stay solvent. Bill Belanger, whose daughter's life was saved by a medical flight, started Fresh Air in 2000, a Caribou for-profit, fixed-wing operator that provides air service for two area ambulance services.
