Abstract

"Focus on Health Care" piece on Bangor-based Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems' controversial reorganization plan. At the center of the debate is the proposed dissolution of EMHS's corporator model, in which more than 500 community members provide oversight of the trustees of EMHS and Acadia Hospital in Bangor. Chicago-based health consultant Jamie Orlikoff calls the structure inefficient and outdated in these competitive times. Norm Ledwin was selected to lead the EMHS network in 1993 and acquired new members in a nine-county region, each bringing its own governance problems. Ledwin wants to reduce the number of corporators to 200 and have them represent a more diverse area. Currently most are from the Bangor area. With a look at how those memberships (corporators) will be allocated to each county.
