Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece. The state's Economic Forecasting Commission is skeptical about Maine's jobs outlook, and notes that the economy has grown at a relatively slow rate as compared to last year. Maine's minimum wage went up to $6.35 an hour on the first of the month, but Ed Gorham, president of the Maine AFL-CIO, said organized labor will push for a "substantial" increase from the next Legislature. Peter Gore, a lobbyist for the Maine State Chamber of Commerce, argues that the state should not get too far ahead of the federal minimum wage or it will hurt competitiveness with other states.
