Abstract
"Next List" piece featuring ten people who are shaping the future of Maine's economy, with a profile of Theresa Secord, 46, executive director of the 140-member Maine Indian Basketmakers Alliance (MIBA) in Orono. Thanks to the alliance and the funding of apprenticeships, the average age of basketmakers has dropped from 63 years to 43 since 1993. MIBA also opened the Wabanaki Arts Center Gallery in Old Town, further developing a growing market for the baskets. MIBA works to strengthen and preserve centuries-old traditions.
