Abstract
"Focus on Health Care" piece on Portland-based Synernet Inc. and company CEO Gerry Vincenzi, who launched a medical transcription service in 2002. The company is reinventing itself in the wake of industry consolidation and cost-cutting measures. Synernet was formed in 1985 as a cooperative of 22 Maine hospitals that pooled purchases. It added capacity by acquiring Bangor-based CAM Transcription, which served some 30 health care facilities. In 2000, Portland-based MaineHealth, a network of hospitals, bought a 50 percent equity stake in Synernet. Seven additional member hospitals own the other 50 percent. Maine Hospital Association president Steve Michaud says no other firm offers a similar range of services to hospitals. Synernet does business with 33 of the 39 hospitals in Maine.
