Abstract

"Newsworthy" piece with a brief profile of Bruce Gilbert, an eight-year veteran of the Maine Department of Transportation's (DOT) Scarborough plow crew. During winter storms, more than 1,500 DOT employees are responsible for more than 8,000 miles of DOT-controlled highways and roads. Gilbert, 56, says he's worried that the employment numbers in Scarborough will start to drop because of the difficulty of attracting new hires. The department's pay rates range from $9.21 to $14.41 per hour, and its maintenance budget this year fell by more than seven percent.
