Abstract

"Focus on Building & Real Estate" piece by Alan Holt, principal of Portland-based Holt & Lachman Architects, and Michael Hicks, principal of Domenech, Hicks & Krockmalnic Architects in Boston. They discuss the lack of affordable housing in Maine and the public bias against denser neighborhoods, which is fueled by NIMBYism, or "not in my back yard-ism." Developers, like those who successfully developed Unity Village Housing in Portland's Bayside neighborhood, need to solicit the opinions of neighbors, have a community outreach plan, and be available to speak with neighbors and community leaders to demonstrate their commitment to the neighborhood, in order to overcome NIMBY opposition.
