Abstract

Maritime journalist Nigel Calder of Alna, inspired by a state-sponsored New Zealand group promoting the country's boatbuilders, this year helped launch the Maine Built Boats Organization (MBBO), made up of boatbuilders, the Marine Trades Association, and members of the state Department of Economic and Community Development. The group hopes to make the Maine-built boats brand recognizable globally. Members will be asked to use a new "Maine Built Boats" logo. The group plans to develop joint advertising programs, sponsor events, and have a presence at boat shows. Several issues that remain to be addressed are ensuring that small boatbuilders benefit as well as large ones and hiring a full-time staff person to take over from the volunteer board.
