Abstract

Maine blueberry farmer Arthur Harvey has been battling the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to adopt stricter standards for the ingredients allowed in foods that are labled "USDA organic." He forced the USDA to retract a list of 38 synthetic substances for use in organic food processing, but Congress recently reversed the effect of that lawsuit. The congressional override smacks of Washington business-as-usual to many, including several national consumer groups. Harvey plans to launch a website to advocate for a grassroots strategy to lobby Congress and the USDA to reverse itself once again.
